Technology During The 20th Century - 1146 Words

Jillian Garrett History 1493 Professor Hanshew 19 June 2015 Research Paper Technology in the early 20th century grew quickly and brought many changes to life both at home and in work. Automobiles, home appliances, and entertainment changed how Americans spent their time and money. During the early to mid-20th century America went through an economical depression, two wars, and recessions, this caused many Americans to go through stages of poverty, fear, and wealth. The advancement of technology did not come without downfalls including pollution, debt, and change in moral beliefs. In 1903 the Ford Motor Company was founded in Detroit, Michigan. Tames describes, when Henry Ford began producing vehicles â€Å"his aim was to turn out†¦show more content†¦Safety regulations were not originally in use when automobiles were first on the road which led to the invention of traffic lights, â€Å"cat’s eyes,† and painting of lines in the road to assist drivers. Vehicles have come a long way since their introduction into American society and they continue to change as newer technology grows. At the turn of the century many homes were cleaned by hand, food was prepared in stoves, and children played in sitting rooms or outside. Technology allowed for changes to be made in the home over the course of just a few years with the introduction of toasters, refrigerators, televisions, and vacuum cleaners. Cooking for the household became easier with the advancements of gas and eventually electric ranges. Busch describes how the shift from gas range to electric range was beneficial as the units were smaller allowing more space in the kitchen, there was better temperature control, and â€Å"oven heat control and exterior coolness since older gas ranges lacked oven thermostats and insulation.† Refrigerators had been around for years, but were large and took up much of the room in a kitchen. Isenstadt states, â€Å"Electric refrigerators in the 1920s and 1930s were seen as a large step toward modernization o f the home.† Shortly after this time customization of refrigerators became popular and with advances in the electrical components involved the units became smaller.
